Isle of Eriska

There is something rather wonderful about driving across the little bridge on the Isle of Eriska. Just a few miles north of Oban, the hotel sits on its own private island, surrounded by woodland, water and mountains. I went for the first time this summer with my mother for a day at their spa, and I’ve been back twice since.

This is a place where I felt completely comfortable as a woman alone walking around. The island has paths meandering through the trees and the coastline, but you are never too far away from the hotel. It felt peaceful and extravagant all at the same time.

I’d give yourself time to actually explore the island while you’re there. I arrived around 9 am and spent a few hours walking the paths, taking pictures, and visiting their goats and Highland Cows. All of which is free of course. Then I headed over to the spa and booked myself in for a swim. One hour in the pool will cost you £15, but it also includes access to the steam room, sauna, and whirlpool.

Then I headed over to the hotel proper for lunch. I went on a quiet day midweek, and the sun was beaming. After walking next to the water for hours, I chose the fish and chips. Oh wow…do you know that feeling when food just takes you back to a memory? The fish was so deliciously crunchy that somewhere deep in my soul I felt like a child again. Except of course for the glass of white wine I ordered with it.

Eriska is accessible luxury. For a day out you can choose exactly what you want. Want a quiet walk for free, perfect. Want a day at a luxury hotel with a massage a swim and a five-course dinner, perfect. Wonderful for a solo traveller, a couple, or a family. Definitely the west coast at its best.
