The places, landscapes and little cornered of Scotland I have discovered along the way.
Inveraray to the
West Coast
There are a couple of must see places on the road from Inveraray to the West Coast, and the first stop is definitely Kilchurn Castle. Build in the 1400’s it was once a fortress and a comfortable residence. Its ruin now sits at the head of Loch Awe and is one of those places that feels unmistakably Scottish. While the castle is dramatic enough, the setting of Scotlands longest freshwater loch and surrounding hills is what makes it worth stopping for. There is a car park off the A85 and the castle is a short walk from the road and absolutely worth it.
St. Conan’s Kirk is one of the most unusual churches in Scotland. built on the banks of Loch Awe, it was designed by Walter Douglas Campbell and combines several different styles of Scottish architecture. Inside you’ll find everything from intricate stone carvings to a chapel said to contain a bone from Robert the Bruce. It’s wonderfully eccentric, incredibly atmospheric and absolutely worth stopping to explore.
